Ten Top Tips for Teachers visiting students on work placements
To make your student’s work experience successful:
Familiarise yourself with the student’s work placement and job description- Telephone the employer in the first two of days to check that all is well, and arrange an appointment to visit the student on placement
- Let the student know when you are due to visit
- When you visit the student, introduce yourself to the employer and the student’s supervisor
- Observe the student at work, and the work environment. If you have any concerns, pass them in to the school’s work experience co-ordinator.
- Discuss the student’s progress with the supervisor
- Speak to the student alone. If this is not possible you may wish to telephone the student at home after work
- Encourage the student to work on areas that may need improvement
- Discuss any problems with the student and the supervisor and try to find a solution
- Complete and return any paperwork to the school’s work experience co-ordinator
