The Diploma is a new qualification, for the 14 to 19 age group, that will provide a real alternative to traditional ‘academic’ qualifications and learning styles. Reforms to the 14 to 19 curriculum, leading to the award of the Diploma, are designed to educate young people for the fast changing world that they are growing up in and offer the opportunity to equip them for adult working life.
All students taking a Diploma will undertake a minimum of ten days work experience.
Diplomas will be suitable for all young people who enjoy the challenge and stimulation of developing knowledge and skills in a ‘real world’ environment and will be available at Levels 1, 2 and 3. They will cover 17 subjects, or lines of learning, and will be available in areas across the country by 2011.
The first of the new Diplomas became available for teaching across England from September 2008 in Construction and the built environment, Creative and media, Engineering, Information technology and Society, health and development.
Five more Diplomas were made available for teaching in September 2009 in Business administration and finance, Hair and beauty studies, Hospitality, Environmental and land-based studies and Manufacturing and product design.
A further four are expected to be available for teaching in September 2010 in Public services, Sport and active leisure, Retail business and Travel and tourism.
The final three Diplomas, Science, Humanities and Languages are expected to be available in 2011.
