Recession hits work experience

Schoolchildren are struggling to secure work experience placements because of the recession. In some cases there is such a short supply of companies offering placements that Year 10 pupils have not been able to take part in work experience this year.

Schools across Sussex have reported difficulties this year. At Willingdon Community School in Eastbourne, only 70% of pupils have managed to secure a July placement.

Headteacher Ian Jungius said: “We’re finding people who previously said yes to placements are now saying they can no longer do it, as they don’t have the staff to support it.The main issue seems to be that many have cut down on staff so can’t afford to have someone looking after a student.”

Heather Collier, director of the National Council for Work Experience, said all age groups are having difficulties finding work experience. She said: “I think it definitely is to do with the recession. With a lot of companies making redundancies, even though these placements wouldn’t be paid, managers will have a lot more on their mind and perhaps this has gone to the bottom of the priority list.”

The Directors of my-work-experience have noticed an increasing problem in the supply of suitable work experience placements in recent years and attribute it partly to the ever growing demand on employers for placements to support a widening use of the workplace for training and development

However we also agree with Heather that the recession has exacerbated the problems of availability and this will have a seriously negative effect on the government’s plans for the development of the new Diplomas.

Helping young people is good for business

Northend printersNorthend Printers in Sheffield are backing the new 14-19 Diplomas. They are providing opportunities for Sheffield students to gain valuable knowledge and experience for this national initiative that aims to combine both practical and theoretical learning in schools and business.

Students from Myers Grove and Stocksbridge Schools recently visited the company for a practical day of learning about the use of IT and Communication Technology in the design and print industry.

Northend HR Consultant Dorothy Betts said ‘Young people are our future and we find that they often have much more to offer than they are sometimes given credit for’ ‘We have always supported initiatives aimed at developing young people’s skills and have invited work experience students for many years’.

Launched this year, 14-19 Diplomas are courses in Business and Industry sectors which combine school and work based learning, giving young people a qualification worth the equivalent of seven GCSE’s.

Northend will also be taking two more students on half-day work experience for six weeks giving them further hands on experience for their Diploma courses.

Ron Robinson, a Director of my-work-experience.com who has been involved in work related and enterprise learning for more than 30 years said: ‘Northend are our printer of choice not just because of the quality, price and delivery they offer, which is excellent, but also because our business is built around young people we naturally always prefer to work with companies who have the same ethos’.

Aaron, 14, sells car on work experience

He may still be three years away from being allowed to drive a car of his own, but 14-year-old Aaron Mills showed he has a big future as a salesman after selling a BMW on his first day of work experience in a used car showroom.

Aaron's success in getting the £2,295 asking price for the car has now landed him a Saturday job at the Lings Honda dealership, in Lowestoft.

Phil Reid, used car sales manager at the Riverside Road showroom, said: “He had been here for six weeks doing one day a week, but he had been round different departments doing different jobs and this was the first time I got a chance to speak to him. He was very, very switched on. I talked to him and showed him how to work the computer system and I told him if a customer came in, to go and speak to them. And the first customer that came in, he introduced himself, did everything properly and professionally. He did a deal on a part-exchange and he got it.”

Aaron is in year 10 and is enrolled on the entrepreneurial enterprise course at Kirkley High School. The course is designed to explore elements of entrepreneurism and help students develop the attitudes to succeed. Cheryl Willis, Kirkley High's enterprise advisor, said: “The work in the classroom has built on the development of enterprising attitudes and this shone brightly through when he sold a car at Lings Honda.”

As a reward for his sale Aaron was presented £50 from Lings when he got back to school. Aaron said: “The money makes me happy and it was a good feeling negotiating and selling the car. It's good to have people believe in you.”

Most Supportive Employer of the Young Apprenticeship Programme 2008

Salford-based housing specialists Bramall Construction was crowned ‘Most Supportive Employer of the Young Apprenticeship Programme 2008’ at the prestigious Lancashire Education Business Partnership (LEBP) Investors in Education awards held in Blackpool.
As part of the Young apprenticeship programme, Bramall has gone out of its way to train 14-16-year-olds in the workplace and assist them in getting their qualifications in construction before leaving school.
Terry said: “We offer the youngsters 50 days work experience over the two year programme where they can come along and witness the work that goes on site. We do everything we can to assist them in gaining their qualifications and moulding them for a successful future in the construction industry.
“It’s a great scheme as you often find that schoolchildren are even more enthusiastic than apprentices, as they have already made up their minds what they want to do at an early age and from an Employers point of view we recognise that when these students do leave school they know what they want to do as a career and will hit the ground running with their employer. Hopefully it will be Bramall Construction.”
